The 17-Minute Morning Tax Nobody Talks About

Did you know you’re losing 47 minutes before you’ve even left the house?

Not to the commute. Not to emails. Not to the school run. To getting ready and more specifically, to your wardrobe.

Research shows that the average woman spends 17 of those 47 minutes purely deciding what to wear. Standing in front of the wardrobe. Staring at it. Trying things on, taking them off, feeling that low-level frustration creep in and eventually settling for something that feels... fine.

Not confident. Not quite right. Not quite you. Just fine.

And I want to talk about that word, fine because I think we’ve all been conditioned to accept it as good enough. We put on the outfit that doesn’t feel wrong enough to change again, walk out the door, and get on with the day. But something sits slightly off. And we carry that with us.

Let’s do the maths for a moment

17 minutes a day. Five days a week. That’s nearly one and a half hours every single week spent standing in front of your wardrobe feeling overwhelmed, uninspired, or disconnected from everything hanging in it.

Over a year? You’ve spent the equivalent of almost three and a half full days in that spot. Staring. Deliberating. Settling.

Three and a half days that could have looked completely different.

I’m not sharing that to make you feel worse about your mornings. I’m sharing it because once you see it clearly, you can’t unsee it. And more importantly, you can do something about it.

It’s not just the time. It’s what that time costs you.

Here’s what I don’t think gets talked about enough: decision fatigue is real. Every single choice you make, even a small one, draws from the same mental energy reserve you need for your work, your clients, your team, your ideas, your creativity.

By the time you’ve spent 17 minutes agonising over what to wear and settled for something that doesn’t feel right, you’ve already spent some of your best thinking. Before you’ve opened your laptop. Before your first meeting. Before the day has even properly started.

And then you walk into work feeling slightly off. Not quite yourself. Not quite on. Some days a little fidgety. And you wonder why some days feel harder before they’ve even begun.

This is something I talk about a lot with the women I work with, and it always lands the same way, like a penny dropping. Because they know that feeling. They just hadn’t connected it to the wardrobe.

The real reason this keeps happening:

Here’s what I’ve learned both from my own experience and from years of working with women on exactly this: the wardrobe is almost never really the problem.

The problem is the gap. The gap between who you’ve become and how you’re showing up on the outside. Your identity has moved forward through a career change, a relationship shift, a new decade, motherhood, perimenopause, or simply the gradual, quiet evolution of becoming more yourself and your wardrobe has stayed exactly where it was.

So every morning, you open those doors and nothing quite fits. Not in size, but in truth. Nothing quite reflects the woman standing in front of it. And that disconnect is exhausting in a way that’s hard to name but impossible to ignore.

It’s what I call the Identity Gap. And it’s the real reason getting dressed feels so hard.

What the shift actually looks like

The most successful women I know aren’t spending more time on their style. They’re spending less. Because they’ve done the work once intentionally building a wardrobe that actually reflects who they are and now getting dressed takes five minutes. Flat.

No deliberating. No second-guessing. No standing in front of the mirror feeling vaguely defeated. Just: here’s my outfit. I look like me. Let’s go.

And they walk into work already on. Not warming up. Not quietly recovering from a small morning wardrobe defeat before the day has even started.

That’s what’s possible when your wardrobe catches up with the woman you’ve become. When the outside finally matches the inside. When getting dressed stops being a daily negotiation with yourself and starts being the easiest part of your morning.

Are you losing your mornings to your wardrobe?
